Weekender - York
For a Scot, a drive from Glasgow to York probably seems long - is literally a third of the distance across the UK. For an Australian expat, it is a chill 4 hour drive, which is basically just up the road (just like driving from the south of Canberra to Sydney’s Northern Beaches).
A weekend in York for us meant walk in the rain, around the old city walls- some of them are on the site of Roman walls dating from 60-70 BC, but mostly they from 12th-14th century where they encircle the whole York medieval city.
We spent time walking through the York Minister, a crazy tall Gothic Cathedral that seems to have been constantly in construction/siege/rebuild since it’s conception in 647.
We spent even more time in the museum below the Minister, learning about the history of the town through the story of the site of the Cathedral evolved from Roman times, through Viking occupation and beyond. This took us to the excellent Yorkshire Museum to fill up our knowledge, and I would recommend a combination of both to get a solid introduction to Yorkshire history.
After a truly excellent Saturday night out at an underground tapas and gin bar, we walked around (the tourists) and the medieval Shambles shopping district. Unsurprisingly needing some fresh air, we decided to head into the country to walk along a river. An excellent way to end our weekend before heading back for our ‘long’ drive home.
