Switzerland Diaries - Bern
A week in Switzerland makes for a quick round trip. It doesn’t seem like a long time to explore a whole country, and I am sure there are many things we didn’t get a chance to see. Perhaps we will get a chance to go back one day, but what we did experience during our week was a truly picturesque country, with clean cities and rugged mountains and VERY expensive food.
After a lovely reunion in Zurich, and some tasty cheese and potatoes (a meal that would become a staple of our week!) we were on the train to Bern on day two. Bern’s Old Town is UNESCO listed as a well-preserved medieval city and is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve personally visited.
We spent our days walking around the streets of the Old Town, eating food at the Christmas market, shopping in local stores and drinking gluhwein over fondue at night. It was a great place to visit and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in the medieval period, or just in spending time (and money..) observing a truly stunning city.
Oh and a very Happy New Year's eve was spent in Bern. Drinking wine and experiencing a Saint Silvester (NYE) feast of Swiss delicacies, including fondue of course. We got to take home a pot of clovers - a traditional favour to bring us good luck for the year ahead. We clocked in the new year in the square by the Cathedral, where everyone brings a glass to raise at midnight to the sound of the Cathedral bells chiming and the backdrop of BYO fireworks displays throughout the square. Somehow, everyone was so well behaved and it was a great local tradition that I am stoked we were able to take part in.
So far so good for 2017!
